The Bike Messenger

This is a cool story:

David Goodrich doesn’t just think there is a global issue with climate change, he says he knows it. And he’s so sure of the problem that he is willing to bike across country educating students about it.

Goodrich, 58, of Rockville recently retired as director of the Climate Observation Division with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. He’s got the science to back up his claims that climate change is real and is taking to his bike to spread the word””emission-free of course.

This is the kind of story that should inspire others who care equally about climate change. In fact, if I were Bill McKibben, I’d pay major attention to what Goodrich is dong.

So let Eli tell you another bike messenger story, as told to him by a Chinese friend.  Back in the early 90s when English was becoming chic and non dangerous in China, all sorts of strange signs went up for stores, you know, the sort of Ye Olde Shoppe thing, but with a Chinese twist.  Eli’s favorite was the Running Water Supplies store (plumbing).  So there was an English teacher quit his job and made it his mission to teach all those store owners what the proper sign should read.  For a small fee of course.  And the English teacher got on his bike and rode all over the town offering his services.  And went broke.

Well, this bike messenger isn’t charging a fee (best as I can tell), and he’s retired.

Here’s something to consider: in three months, he’ll almost certainly do more to advance the climate change cause than you have as an acidic blogger over how many years?

He’ll atleast be a tad fitter. I would cheer him on as long as the science remains in the front seat. These kinds of things can backfire pretty easily… we’ve seen some pretty unintentionally hilarious recent examples as performed by the Catlin Arctic survery team (Live from the ice) and Lewis Gordon Pugh’s impassioned yet naive attempt to paddle a kayak to the North Pole in 2008.

  4. Paul in Sweden says:

“I have friends who do think I am certifiable,” Goodrich said.”

No doubt, he obviously has hero worshipers in the eco-movement.
